21 August 2004 Inside a pizza place. I can't tell if the sausage has just coughed up a meatball from the heimlich maneuver or is unhappy that the broccoli loooves it.

21 August 2004 A valved Bombardon. This instrument isn't widely played anymore. It's parts are now covered by the tuba.
DSC01431.JPG
21 August 2004 Now I've forgotten whether this is a bombardon or and ophecleide!! arg.
DSC01432.JPG
21 August 2004 I think this is an Ophecleide. If you see a wooden instrument like this with a brass bell, it's now sometimes called a Russian Bassoon, but it's really a very old type of instrument. Apparently still played by some bands until pretty recently tho, but the display case at the Met didn't mention that.

21 August 2004 A coffee shop called The Hungarian, in Morningside Heights, next to Columbia, has the only free refil in Manhattan. Too bad the coffee is vile. However the pastries aren't bad and the bathroom grafitti is appropriately pretentious, given it's proximity to the ivy league.
