This guy is preparing for his recorder exam. He wants the world to know he suffers for art, and the sins of composers.

This piece was insanely difficult for the players. The timings were irregular and difficult. If composers want to compose these sort of rhythms, they need to invent a notation and a counting system which can help the performers. this kind of composition is really informed by notation programs and computer and whatnot, which is great, but the performer needs some help.

She sang a song from her opera, which premiered later during the Spring Fest. I didn't see the opera, but the rumor is that it's about her former composition teacher who was fired for having an extra-curricular relationship with her. (gossip, gossip!)

Check out the packaging of the Women Take Back the Noise compilation. The program notes are on a set of glossy postcard sized papers, double sided. The flower on the outside of the back is actually a crackly box. If you hold down a metal tab and wiggle the metal spike in the flower center, it makes squealing noises and a little led lights up. the whole compilation is creative commons licensed, but the packaging is so compelling, it provides a strong reason for folks to want to buy the physical package. The whole thing was designed in such a way as to maximize exposure for the artists involved. Very well done!
In addition to the awesome concept and packaging, the music is fantastic too, which, of course, is the point.

The three CDs that come with Women Take Back the Noise all have flowers on them and are organized by theme. the entire visual aspect of the compilation toys with the idea of gender and femininity. Noise + flowers = why the hell would you think that noise is for boys?
At the same time that the floral motif deconstructs gender and highlights sexism in musical genre, it also reinforces certain notions of gender and femininity, by referencing the symbols, it acknowledges a certain validity, at the same time as questioning it. Is this an example of camp?
Anyway, I didn't participate because I'm a boy.
