I just gave a talk about FOSS and music and gave out copies of the Fossbox free software CD for mac. Here is the readme file that came with it, with download links. You can also find a bunch of cool free mac software from the website http:\/\/www.opensourcemac.org\/<\/a>

Welcome to the Fossbox Free CD<\/H1>
\nThe free CD gives you a taster of the free
\nsoftware options available for the Mac. In this document, you’ll find
\na brief description of the software and links to instructions for
\ninstalling it. You can find free
\ntutorials and books to help you get the best from the software<\/A> on
\nthe Fossbox website. <\/p>\n

Office and project software<\/H2>
\nOpen
\nOffice<\/A> is a free alternative to MS Office. It’s very similar and
\nmost people are able to get started and carry on as usual without any
\nspecial training to use it. It has a word processor, a spreadsheet,
\npresentation and data-base with wizards. Download it here.<\/a>To get you started
\nusing
\nOpen Office you’ll find tutorials here<\/A> and some
\nflash tutorials here<\/A>. <\/p>\n

If you find Open
\nOffice to be too slow, Neo
\nOffice<\/A> is a mac-specific version of it that has fewer features
\nbut quite a bit more speed. You can download
\nit here<\/A>. <\/p>\n

Skim<\/A>
\nis a PDF viewer that allows you to modify and annotate PDF files, for
\nexample, by filling in forms. Download it here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Scribus<\/A>
\nis a free Desktop Publisher. Download it here<\/a>. You’ll
\nfind free
\nScribus video tutorials here<\/A>
\n

Internet<\/H2>
\nThunderbird<\/A>
\nis a free email programme<\/B>. Download it here.<\/a> and
\nfollow the on-screen instructions. To get started using Thunderbird
\nyou will find illustrated
\ntutorials here<\/A>. <\/p>\n

If you would like a
\ncalendar, this can be added to Thunderbird. Follow
\nthese illustrated instructions to add a calendar<\/A>. <\/p>\n

Browsing the internet<\/H3>
\nAlthough the Safari browser is included with OS X,
\nthere’s an alternative browser called Firefox<\/a>. Download it here.<\/a>. It
\nhas more features and is more customisable.
\n

Website editor<\/H3>
\nTo help you make simple websites, Kompozer<\/B><\/A>
\nis a visual HTML editor<\/B> with formatting buttons. Download it here.<\/a>You’ll find free
\nKompozer tutorials here<\/A>
\nThese tutorials are for a previous version of
\nKompozer called NVU but Kompozer is almost identical so you should be
\nable to get started:

To upload website files to the internet, you need
\nan FTP client so check out <\/B>Filezilla<\/A>. You can download it here.<\/a>. (In order to install it, you
\nmay need to first install The Unarchiver<\/a> utility. Click the link to download it.)
\nYour ISP will be able to
\ngive you the login information you need to set up FileZilla \u2013 ask
\nthe people you rent your website space from.<\/B><\/I> <\/p>\n

Instant Messaging<\/H3>
\nAudium<\/A>
\nallows you to connect to multiple IM accounts, including Facebook, in
\na single app. Download it here.<\/a>

File Sharing<\/H3>

\nis a Bit Torrent client. Download it here.<\/a>.

Graphics<\/H2>
\nThere are two graphics programmes included on the
\nCD. <\/p>\n

If you want to do serious photo-editing, you need
\nthe GIMP,<\/A> a
\nfully-featured graphics programme<\/B>. Download
\nit here<\/A>. Gimp on OS X requires X Windows, which is included with
\nyour system CD or a free version can be downloaded

\nis an open source programming language environment for people who

\nis a light-weight sound editor. There is a stable version and a beta version. The beta has more and better features, but you will need to save early and often. If that worries you, get the stable version instead. Download the stable version here.<\/a> or Download the beta version here<\/a>.

Ardour<\/A>
\nis a a fully-featured Digital Audio Workstation with plug-in support
\nthat can be used for serious audio projects. You can download it here.<\/a> They will ask you if you want to donate to the project. You can put whatever amount you wish in the box, including $0.
\nArdour
\nrelies on a helper application called Jack<\/A>,
\nwhich is also useful in it’s own right. Download

Programming<\/B>
\nPd<\/A>
\nis a real-time graphical dataflow programming environment for audio,
\nvideo and graphical processing. It is especially useful for rapid
\nprototyping and can be used to write reactive music or the iPhone via
\nthe RjD<\/A>j app.

SuperCollider<\/A>
\nis an environment and programming language for real time audio
\nsynthesis and algorithmic composition. It has a bit of a learning
\ncurve, however, it is extremely
