The keyboard outputs two <strong>control voltages<\/strong>. One is the <strong>gate<\/strong>, which is open when a key is pressed and closed when one isn&#8217;t, and the other is a <strong>CV<\/strong> which corresponds to the frequency associated with the particular key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/celesteh\/49014139783\/in\/photostream\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49014139783_7e0f110f92.jpg\" alt=\"Roland keyboard\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You would send the gate to an envelope generator. This is a module that makes a nicer shape than on or off, For instance, the Roland 100 has an ADSR envelope &#8211; Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release which vaguely corresponds to the amplitude profile of striking a piano key. It&#8217;s really loud, then it gets quieter and then it sustains for a while until you let go of the key, then when you release they key it goes to nothing. You can see in the photo that we have fast attacks and decays, and an almost instant release. The sustain level is quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;d send the CV to a <strong>VCO<\/strong> &#8211; a voltage controlled oscillator. It controls the pitch of the oscillator. You&#8217;ve plugged in your keyboard which tells the oscillator how to move the pitch up and down, but you haven&#8217;t set the base frequency. The colours of the wires correspond only to how long they are. I could send the gate to a second envelope generator to control the filter. Or I could send the VC to a bunch of slightly detune oscillators. This can sound very nice with sawtooth waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s also the option to use one oscillator to modify another, which is <strong>FM<\/strong> or I could use an oscillator to modify an VCA, which is <strong>AM<\/strong>. Those make more complicated spectra for sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putting a complicated spectra or noise through a filter is called <strong>subtractive synthesis<\/strong>. People used to put synthesisers based on what their filters sounded like so they could do this kind of synthesis. <strong>Low pass filters<\/strong> were an especially popular way of doing this, but people also used other shapes like <strong>high pass<\/strong>, <strong>band pass<\/strong> and <strong>band reject<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Roland has a lot of oscillators, so you can also do some <strong>additive synthesis<\/strong> where you take a bunch of waves (like detuned saws) and add them together, but sending them all to a module that takes multiple inputs, like a filter, mixer or VCA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can send any kind of audio into a filter, VCA, or mod input to an oscillator, if you want to change the spectrum of a recording using the synthesiser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A word of warning on this particular synthesiser is that the arpeggiator on the keyboard is broken and it will sound weird if you try to use it.
