The author writes, &#8216;Nell appears to have been consistent in viewing herself as a man.&#8217; Given that consistency, wouldn&#8217;t it be more correct to refer to him as &#8216;he&#8217;?  Most style guides, including the AP guide, do say that pronoun use should conform to how the subject views themself.
