The statue of Joan of Arc in Orléans. It's right in the center of the city.
Orléans was under partial siege during the Hundred Years War. They were losing. Then this teenager girl came in and said she could save the day. And she did.
The town is full of stuff for Jeanne d'Arc. Given her ubiquitousness, she seems to lack the right-wing association she has in Paris and the rest of France.

During the fête de Jeanne d'Arc, the cathedral of Orléans displays the coats of arms of important nobles involved in defending the city during the Hundred Years war.
This is the coat of arms of Joan of Arc.

Inside the cathedral at Orléans, there are several stained glass windows depicting the life of Joan or Arc. They also have an altar dedicated to her, as she is a Catholic saint since the 1920's.

The fête de Jeanne d'Arc is also celebrated with a medieval faire.
These guys were actually swinging battle axes at each other. During a later fight, one of them hacked the other one's shield to splintered shreds.

This is a city building in Orléans with a famous statue of Joan of Arc in front of it. In honor of the fête, they placed a bunch of flowers around it.

Inside a city building, the fireplace lintel contains reliefs of important moments in Joan of Arc's life.
On the left, St. Michael appears to her during her girlhood in Domremi.
In the middle, she captures the tower on the bridge in Orléans.
On the right, she is present at Charles' coronation in Reims.
(they chose to focus on the high points.)

This is a very famous painting of Joan of Arc witha small statue of her in front of it. I don't know if the painting is an original or a copy.

I've noticed that a fair number of statues and ornaments include animals with tits. Why is that?

What do you do with ancient bits of churches after the church is knocked down? Put it up in a park!

Nicole's quest for good madelines in France has been surprisingly frustrating. They're like the Twinkies of France. You can get them everywhere, but home-made ones are better.
At this tea house across from the Maison de Jeanne d'Arc (a re-construction if the house she stayed in Orléans), they actually have good madelines. They are strangely gigantic though.
The largeness changes the texture, so they actually do dissolve in tea as described by Proust.
Anyway, if you happen by this nice little teahouse, the ones withOUT chocolate chips are lemony and superior.
