Do not RSVP to protests

Dear Madam or Sir,

I am writing about your RSVP policy. I’m a member of your organisation and I think its great that this group is turning out to protest Trump.  I also understand that most of your events run more smoothly when you know who is going to show up.

However, I would like to very strongly encourage you to stop asking for RSVPs for protests. In the current political climate this is extremely unwise. Elderly pensioners holding peace placards are being arrested at their homes post protest. Imagine how much easier this would be if there was a list of participants! For those of us who might have to return to the US, at a time when senior figures in the administration are calling for all liberal and left activists to be arrested, this is also putting participants at risk.

I know in normal times, running a peaceful and perfectly legal protest aimed at a politician would be obviously no risk whatsoever. But we are really not in normal times.

I understand your reluctance to put the meetup location in a mass email, but do note that bad actors can easily find it by also RSVPing.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that this issue is quite urgent and serious.

Best,
Charles
